Arno Schuitemaker

Work

After After

World premiere at Julidans on July 7th, 2024, in Internationaal Theater Amsterdam

In After After, Arno Schuitemaker finds inspiration in a question by the young Italian philosopher Federico Campagna: ‘How can we help the creation of new worlds out of the ruins of our own?’ With seven dancers, the performance starts from a white canvas and takes a thrilling dive into the unknown.

In the background lies the idea that Campagna describes in his work: how each of the civilizations we know so far – the Egyptian, the Greek, the Roman and so on – has always reached a climax, only to fall apart. Arno Schuitemaker: "In his view, we have now arrived at the final stretch of the neoliberal or capitalist society. There is no way out anymore. I don't want to focus on showing the ruins, but take up a search how we can create new worlds.”

After After is an ode to the attempt. “It is vital that we keep trying. How could those new worlds emerge? What could we inscribe on an empty sheet?” The dancers form a diverse cast, bursting with energy, each empowered by their individual strengths. The stage is their playground, their bodies are their instruments, and their versatility is the key.
