What if Monday isn’t the beginning of the week, but the aftermath of a choice we haven’t made yet?
Normally, a footprint follows a step, and an echo follows a sound. The performance turns that familiar order around. In a landscape of stones, four performers move and sing in reverse. Even walking can no longer be taken for granted.
Monday, seemingly just another day, lets us temporarily stand on the far side of a future consequence and look back at the present differently. Not to undo what has happened, but to change how we understand the actions we can still take.
Here, the weight of our choices becomes tangible. Structures that seem timeless or untouchable gain power when we leave them unquestioned. Through the performers’ shared effort, what seemed immovable moves.
An ordinary moment on an ordinary day holds the possibility of altering what follows.
One of the inspirations for the music of Monday is the Song of Seikilos, the oldest surviving complete musical composition, preserved as an inscription in stone. The performers sing a new arrangement that imagines how the song might sound today, as well as Guillaume de Machaut’s fourteenth-century Ma fin est mon commencement, whose melodic lines run both forwards and backwards.
Nothing starts without a trace.
